Weave Quality and What to Look For

Close-up detail of hand-woven alpaca diamond blanket showing tight weave quality

Our alpaca diamond blankets are hand-woven by skilled artisans in Peru using traditional floor looms. These looms allow weavers to control tension precisely across the warp threads while interlacing the weft to create the diamond pattern you see. Each blanket takes several days to complete, with the weaver working methodically to maintain consistent quality throughout.

What Makes a Quality Weave

The most important indicator of quality is weave tightness. Look at how closely the threads are packed together—in a well-made blanket, there should be minimal gaps between fibers. This tight construction provides better insulation, prevents pilling, and ensures the blanket holds its shape over time.

In the main body of the blanket, you'll notice the diamond pattern is dense and clearly defined. Each intersection of the blue-grey and cream fibers is precise and uniform. This consistency across the entire piece indicates skilled craftsmanship and proper loom tension.

Pattern Consistency

Check that the diamond motif maintains even spacing from edge to edge. Irregular patterns or distorted shapes can signal inconsistent tension during weaving, which may lead to warping or uneven wear.

Edge Construction

Quality blankets have hand-knotted fringe that's part of the original warp threads, not added trim. The weave naturally loosens near the edges before transitioning to the fringe, which is intentional—it prevents unraveling while keeping the edge secure.

Why Tight Weave Matters

A tightly woven alpaca blanket will be warmer and more durable than a loose weave. The dense structure traps air for insulation while allowing alpaca's natural breathability to regulate temperature. It also resists snagging and maintains its appearance through regular use and washing.

When evaluating an alpaca blanket, examine the weave closely. A well-constructed piece is an investment that will last for years.
